The loss of Winger, Brandon Asher-Wood and Fullback; Marlo Weich who have both joined the SA Rugby 7’s Academy and the SWD Eagles respectively during this past week did not place any damper on the well-drilled Hamilton outfit.

After returning from a short international tour to Georgia with the WP Rugby Academy – Fullback, Marlo Weich continued his excellent form by scoring no fewer than four tries for Hamilton SP-RFC in their big 55 – 6 away at Primrose on Saturday. Amazingly Marlo Weich also scored all five of the WP Academy tries in there three match series against the Georgian u/20 team who are preparing to participate and host the Under 20 – Rugby World Cup. Match day two in the 2017 SLA was away outing against the much improved Brackenfell RFC. The game was played in sweltering hot weather conditions on a hard dry surface and this all because of the current drought that is crippling our beautiful Cape.
Head Coach, Niekkie Viljoen made two changes from the team that drew against False Bay. Greg van Jaarsveld (Hooker) returning from a calf injury after a short spell with the “Seccies”, got his first start of the season while Justin Moberly (Lock) made his debut after missing the season’s opener because of a bereavement in his family. Hosting the 2016 SLA Champions was always going to be a tough and exciting affair. What happened on a warm Saturday afternoon was one of the most dramatic finishes to be witnessed. Match day three in the Hamilton SP-RFC preseason preparations continued with a powerful victory against Villager in the 140th Derby Day match and in doing so retained the “Friendship” trophy.
Villager RFC did their level best to retain possession from numerous pick and ruck movements throughout the game by starving possession from the much fancied Hamilton outfit. Unfortunately they were constantly outplayed and struggled to cross the advantage line. With this tactic, they often lost possession and were punished by the terrific running game Hamilton’s produced in match. Preseason preparation for the upcoming WP SLA rugby season continued as Hamilton SP RFC 1st team squad travelled to the Bay on Saturday 11 March 2017 after an impressive 33-14 mid-week win against an Argentina 1st Division Club – Biblioteca Mariano Moreno.
Taking on the 2016 Champions was always going to be a tough one, though Hammies were the only club to take points off False Bay in last year’s pulsating draw at the Bay. With 10 senior players not available due to injury, Head Coach – Niekkie Viljoen and his staff selected a very solid 25 man squad for this friendly outing.
