There was a real tension in the air as two unbeaten 3rd teams gathered on a near perfect day for Rugby at Hamilton on Saturday.
Hamilton SP-RFC disappointed after the surprise home loss against Tygerberg RFC a week ago wanted to prove why they are still top of the SLA log when they visited bottom of the league table, Pniel-Villagers RFC on Saturday. With several players out injured, Head Coach, Niekkie Viljoen ran the changes for this away outing. He gave 1st team debuts to the former Puma Scrumhalf, Johan Herbst and to the young talented Nathan Meilhon (Prop) who had returned from a season playing rugby in France. Harlon Klaassen also made a welcome return from the WP squad duties, while Luke van der Smit (Loose Forward) and Grant Muller (Hooker) returned from our Seccies. Long serving Hammies centre Dan Mackenzie really does enjoy a home a fixture and on Saturday it showed as he produced yet again for the 3rds with no less than 4 tries in a single match.
After coming off four consecutive losses, the U20A were keen to get back into winning ways. During the two-week break, we didn’t stop working hard and it showed in their performance against Tygerberg. We knew Tygerberg weren’t going to be an easy side as they are sitting third on the log and has put in some massive performances against tough opponents. The first of our U20’s to be featured, Wonga Koti plays for the U20A side at 8th Man. Having been a loosie all his rugby career he is a talented athlete playing both hockey and basketball.
In fact not only did he play but represented Western Province in both Hockey (as a goalkeeper) and Basketball. In Grade 9 Wonga took the decision to focus on rugby and has since then had a season at UWC after school before joining Hammies.
Best Rugby Memories:
“Scoring my first try as a young boy. Another that sticks with me is going the through all the rounds at the Craven Week trials”
Wonga talks about his rugby journey and what motivates him –
“I played a rugby when I was really young but then I stopped because my primary school didn’t have any rugby and I had to join other sports , I played hockey which I represented WP until u14 , I decided in grade 9 I will go back rugby and have played ever since.
My passion for rugby runs deep my uncle, Msimelelo Koti, played for SARU, WPRB and Border- I hope have the opportunity to play further up the ranks and possibly professional one day.”

After a good win against Brackenfell two weeks ago the Seccies were looking to build on that performance. We had spoken during the week that we needed to be more clinical in our execution of plays and ensure that the pressure that we built was turned into points.
This had been an issue for us over the two league games played so far. Continue reading Seccies continue to build their season
